The two state parks in the metro area are Sweetwater Creek State Park and Panola Mountain State Park. Other state parks within 50 miles or less from Decatur are Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site, Fort Yargo State Park, High Falls State Park, Hard Labor Creek State Park, Indian Springs State Park, and Pickett's Mill Battlefield Historic Site.
If you haven't visited a Georgia state park, you're in for a treat when you do. They offer a wide variety of fitness and recreational opportunities (hiking, fishing, golfing, equestrian, etc.), and a way to connect with some of the more beautiful natural environments in the state.
P.S. There is a Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites organization for those interested.
