10 Basic Tips for Healthy Brown Bag Lunches
By Marla Brodsky, RD, LD, CNSD (Postive Promotions)

1. Choose whole-grain breads, such as whole wheat or rye.

2. Aim for at least 2 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables.

3. If you have meat, make yours low-fat. Also consider meat substitutes, such as beans and soy luncheon meats.

4. Limit fatty condiments such as mayonnaise, butter or creamy dressings. Check out veggie condiments, including roasted red pepper. They can jaxx up lower-fat meats so they're more satisfying.

5. Choose proteins with healthy fat sources, such as salmon, tuna or soy.

6. If you want chips, choose baked chips or those fried in healthful oils.

7. Take along bottled water so you're not tempted by sweet drinks.

8. Stock up on a variety of healthy ingredients so that making a nutritious lunch is quick and easy.

9. Look for healthy convenience foods at the supermarket, such as packaged veggies and fruits, individual low-fat cheeses, and condiments, spreads and dips.

10. Try new items to add variety, different nutrients and excitement at lunchtime!
