Saturday - Wheels Day/Touch a Truck for All Ages!

The annual Wheels Day/Touch a Truck event will be held from 12 to 3 pm, Saturday, March 21st, at the Decatur High School upper parking lot on West Howard Ave.

Parking at the high school is limited, but is available throughout the surrounding area, including N. McDonough St. Included are a fire truck, dump trucks, tractors, police cars, sanitation vehicles and more! This is a great event for children of all ages.

Decatur High Student/Star Gardener

In case you missed it, here's a special AJC story about superstar Decatur High student Anna Rose Gable, who started a new garden on the high school grounds by the corner of East Howard & College (click HERE for the article).

Gardening is the No. 2 recreation activity in America. Decatur Active Living runs the Scott Garden behind the recreation center, and is in the process of working on providing more city gardens.

Scott Garden, open to all city residents, is one of the nicest places in Decatur to sit and relax, whether eating lunch if you work downtown, having a family picnic, reading a book on a nice day, etc. Great job by Anna Rose Gable to bring gardening to Decatur High.

Beach Party June 19, 2009 • 5 p.m. to midnight
Decatur brings in 60 tons of sand and turns the square into a beach for this annual event. Dance in the streets to the beach music from the live band performing from the stage that stretches across Ponce de Leon Avenue. Activities include children's boardwalk games, face painting, wading pools in the sand and more. Adults $6.50 in advance, $10 at the gate; children 12 and under, free (limit two children per paying adult). No coolers, glass or pets allowed. Sponsored by Decatur Business Association. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit downtown improvement projects. Online ticket sales are fully operational. Thank you for your patience!

Earth Day at Oakhurst - Volunteers Needed for Giant Puppet Parade

The Annual Earth Day at Oakhurst is Saturday, April 18th, from 10am to 2pm, at Harmoney Park, the intersection of East Lake Dr. and Oakview Rd. The event will feature music by the Morgan Rowe Band from 11 am to 2pm, and a Giant Puppet Parade, featuring the Seed and Feed Marching Abominables at 12:30pm (Parade line up begins at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church).

Join us for animal/educational activities, crafts and earth friendly displays as we celebrate the 38th anniversary of Earth Day.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Earth Day Committee will hold three workshops to build the large puppets. All ages are invited to attend. Bring your creative ideas and energy.

Aikido Decatur

In its regular schedule, Aikido Decatur offers classes to children 8 to 12 and to youth and adults 13 and over at its dojo on the square in downtown Decatur. Joel Riggs (2nd dan), the chief instructor at Aikido Decatur, began training in San Francisco in 1993 with Robert Nadeau (7th dan), a student of the founder of aikido Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei (1883-1969). What is Aikido?
Aikido is a non-violent martial art for adults and children that teaches how control or escape from attackers while not harming them. When someone attacks, an aikidoist will move in the same direction and at the same speed as the attacker, blending with their energy without a hard impact.
Once a connection is made, the aikidoist can then take control of the attacker's body with one of hundreds of techniques, and can then either pin them to the ground or throw them a short distance away. Through consistent training, aikidoists develop a heightened sense of their surroundings, the ability to resolve conflicts without injury, and an attitude of harmony that just might keep them from being attacked in the first place!
